Accident with rented car. What do I do?

Journeys are always nice, and family holidays are the most anticipated moments of the year. Regardless of your destination, road trips around the country or abroad are worthwhile experiences for everyone, whether you do it with your friends or with your family.

When planning these road trips, whether you do it with your own car or a rental, you do not depend on the schedule of trains, buses or airplanes, but you are capable to create your own schedule and routes, as you please.

A very important thing regarding these trips is to inform yourself properly and on time on all possible situations you might encounter. Unfortunately, one of them is the possibility to have a car accident. When you’re involved in an accident with a rental car, it is advisable to know in advance the most important steps you need to take in order to get yourself out of trouble.

Depending of course on the stipulations of the lease, if such an incident occurs, it is better to go through the following steps:

1. Firstthing to do is to contact as soon as possible the company from which you rented the car, so you can explain them the situation and have them offer you the help you need. It is recommended to notify them within 2 hours after the accident.

2. You need to get copies of all documents of the persons involved in the accident, which later you will turn over to company’s representatives. These documents are RCA insurance policy, identity card, driving license, registration certificate and police report.

3. If the person who rented the car or the other person involved in the accident is foreign, the investigation must be conducted on the spot and the police report must be attached to the documents list.

4. Do not abandon the car under any circumstances, unless you ensure its safety.

5. In case the accident occurs in a foreign country, is it recommended to also notify the local police along with the company, so they can give you a full report for the insurance company.

Although the probability of such a situation to occur is quite low, it still exists. To avoid accidents and further inconveniences during your trip, make sure you drive safe and be alert.
